Dr. Hall presented information on data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention regarding cervical cancer screening and summarized the Pap smear screening rates in high mortality counties. Among white women, lower screening rates were observed in high mortality counties, and lower screening rates were observed in high mortality counties in all regions except the Northeast. Limitations with analyzing patterns of the Pap test screening include issues with sample size and the effect of lower socioeconomic status and lack of telephones may have for completing the survey in relation to undercounting groups less likely to be screened.
