Dr. Maria Fernandez described several breast and cervical cancer projects conducted in some of the more than 1,800 unincorporated, un-zoned, semi-rural Hispanic communities along the Texas border that are called “Colonias.” She provided information on the demographics and the challenges in reaching the farm workers. She also provided a comprehensive description of her collaboration with the National Center for Farm worker Health project and their CDC funded Replication and Evaluation of Effective Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Programs Grant. As part of this collaboration she directed the intervention development and evaluation of a program designed to increased breast and cervical cancer screening among migrant and seasonal farm worker women.
