Dr. Irene Hall presented information on the Center’s for Disease Control National Program of Cancer Registries including a summary data of the incidence of cancer of the cervix from 1995-1998 for several states with high mortality counties. While there was some indication of higher incidence rates and more cancer diagnosed at later stages of disease in high mortality rural counties, limitations resulting from state-specific cancer registry data include availability of data and small numbers for subpopulations made firm conclusions difficult to draw. Improved cancer surveillance and greater outreach for early detection were recommended.
