Dr. Nancy Breen presented information on cervical cancer screening data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) in order to examine national estimates. Unlike the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), the NHIS provides additional detail of insurance categories and information on usual source of care. Additionally, NHIS data includes earlier data, women without telephones and both those who have and have not had a hysterectomy. The data showed that national Pap smear use remained high between 1987 and 1998. However, in 1998 there were large differences in Pap smear use by age, income, insurance and usual source of care.
