Despite a three-fold reduction in cervical cancer mortality 50 years after the introduction of the Pap smear, Dr. Kerner presented cancer mortality maps for whites (including Hispanics and non-Hispanics) and blacks that indicated that in many states, stable clusters of county populations have continued to experience a relatively high rate of cervix cancer mortality. As a framework for the rest of the meeting, Dr. Kerner outlined three possible causal pathways, the opportunities to intervene across the cancer control continuum, and the three levels (national, regional and local) of audiences that ultimately must be informed and influenced if this long-standing and avoidable disparity is to be eliminated.
