Dr. Charles Given from Michigan State University provided information linking cervical cancer mortality and Medicaid coverage in Michigan. Dr. Given utilized data from the Michigan Cancer Registry, the Detroit Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Registry and Medicaid claim files for Fee-for-Service cervical cancer patients to determine whether race, age and Medicaid coverage affected a woman’s mortality from cervical cancer. Racial differences in stage, treatment, and death was not apparent, while older patients tended to be diagnosed at later stages of disease. Women with no insurance coverage prior to cervical cancer diagnosis and subsequent medical coverage were more likely to die.
